Today I’m featured on the @swatchandrepeat blog where I share about ”The Big Detour” - what I call the story on how I became a pattern designer, starting from absolutely zero (and close call to becoming a stand up comedian instead...).
.
To read go to @swatchandrepeat and the link in her bio.
.
Then if you have any Q:s, let me know in a comment 😊
Been digging through my sketch & illustrations drawers and found these inky roses, unwanted, discarded. So I gave them some life in this moody pattern. Just took me an hour or so: scanning, tracing/vectorizing, assembling (in a simple tossed layout). Most time was spent on recoloring and finding the right palette that felt right.⠀
.💐⠀
I bet you have a drawer full of unused illustrations too, am I right?⠀
.💐⠀
So, I challenge you to find some, make a pattern and post (just a simple quick one). And tag me so I can see it 😃.
I’ve been working on some new pattern designs and one of my favourite ways to start is to make an initial plan of my pattern layout using an old school pattern creating technique and not the pattern tool in Illustrator. Fir this I’m using a modern material: post-its and it just gives a much more connected feeling to the pattern I’m about to create. Making a thorough plan is something that I’ve been practicing ever since my days as a markering project manager at Toyota. Giving the plan phase proper attention will make it easier to get it right from the beginning and not having to start over when it doesn’t turn out as you envisioned it in your head.⠀
.🌺⠀
I learned this post-it technique by Swedish pattern design star @hannawendelbo.⠀
.🌺⠀
Would you like to learn more about and try this technique?⠀
.🌺⠀
And if you’ve already tried it, what did you think?⠀

Toile Cape Cod. Would be fun for our bathroom. Are you a mockup addict like me?
Romantic Toile is perfect for the day of romance. Happy Valentines Day! Glad Alla Hjärtans Dag! To all you lovely people out there. ❤️
Weird fact: I’m a pattern designer but 75% of the walls in our home are painted white...⠀
.⠀
But I have a good explanation for it. White walls are great if you want to create your own wallpaper mockups 😜.
